Luke Williams full of admiration after late Peterborough win over Leyton Orient

Peterborough boss Luke Williams was full of admiration for his team after their late 1-0 win over Leyton Orient.

Dom Ballard hit a post for Orient in the opening minutes of the game.

Orient keeper Tommy Simkin made a brilliant diving save to keep out Harry Leonard just before half-time.

Posh thought they had won a penalty a minute later as David Okagbue was ruled to have handled, before it was overturned by referee Abigail Byrne.

But Peterborough were not to be denied when Declan Frith headed home from close range to seal a fourth win in a row.

“I admire the group, I really do,” he said. “They were in a really tough spot and bottom of the league. They were points away from safety and with a bad goal difference.

“The backline has outstanding leadership and are strong. They are helping us to stay in games. Those characters are strong for this level.

“They are showing the character they have. There are some really strong characters there.

“I felt that once the penalty was overruled it wasn’t going to be our day.

“The subs gave us a fresh energy and optimism and we managed to use that to our advantage to get the goal.

“There is something special about winning a game with a late goal like that.

“I thought the ref gave herself plenty of time to make the decision and was strong enough to have overruled the decision on the penalty, so I respect that.

“It was frustrating with how sloppy we were with the ball and there was a bite missing at times.”

Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens felt his side had paid the price for poor decision-making.

“It is happening too often. We are naive in certain situations and we don’t respect the point,” he said.

“The goal came from a throw-in in their half and we have made a bad decision. We have made too many bad decisions all game, too many lost passes and giving the ball away too often.

“We were just too passive and not aggressive enough. If we had been more aggressive we could have had a lot of chances.

“We got to them and then stopped and didn’t do the last bit and get the ball back. We are so passive.

“Our squad is a bit stretched at the moment, especially in attacking areas, and we don’t have many options on the bench.

“We are having to change personnel all the time because of injuries and that is not helping.

“It was a manic game and the decision-making and control of the game wasn’t great. The effort and work-rate was there, but I think we need a bit of experience and some reinforcements.”
