Lionel Messi enacted a measure of revenge against the side that eliminated him from last year’s MLS play-offs by finding the back of the net in Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Sunday.

The Herons suffered a shock upset to Atlanta in the opening round of the MLS Cup play-offs last year, and history threatened to repeat itself early when Emmanuel Latte Lath scored in the 11th minute.

But the 37-year-old Argentinian equalised in the 20th minute, with neither side able to take a definitive lead in the first half.

The second half brought much of the same until Fafa Picault snatched victory with a superb header in the 89th minute.

It was Messi’s first goal of the new MLS season, with Inter Miami next hosting the Philadelphia Union on March 29.
