Darren Ferguson hails Peterborough squad for ending winless run against Wycombe

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said he was proud of his players after they claimed their first win of the Sky Bet League One season by registering a 2-1 victory over Wycombe.

First-half goals from recent additions Matthew Garbett and Jimmy-Jay Morgan proved to be enough to secure all three points for Posh, with Fred Onyedinma pulling one back for the visitors.

Peterborough remain bottom of the table with four points from eight matches, but Ferguson hailed his side for finally bringing their winless run to an end.

“They have [done me proud],” he said. “They’ve put everything into it. They’ve left everything out there.

“Some of them are not ready for 90 minutes, but they’re just digging it out and that’s what you need and that’s what we got today.

“And I have to credit them for the effort they put in today.”

Wycombe created plenty of chances to snatch an equaliser, but Peterborough goalkeeper Alex Bass produced an assured performance to keep them out.

“It was obviously an important result for us,” Ferguson added.

“I felt in the first half, apart from Alex (Bass) making a big save after five minutes with a clear-cut chance they had, we were good in moments.

“I thought we were comfortable, both goals were very good – really high quality – and I thought we deservedly went in ahead.

“And then, of course, goals do change games and we started the second half really badly.

“From kick-off, we kicked the ball out of play and that wasn’t part of the plan. And that’s just lapses of concentration.

“[We conceded] a soft goal and a lot of teams in our position would probably have lost that game, but we’ve dug it out.”

Wycombe are still in 19th place, with only one win to their name.

Boss Mike Dodds was frustrated by the nature of the goals they conceded.

“We can say the first goal’s a shot from 35 yards and it’s an unbelievable finish, but we had an opportunity down in the bottom corner to stop them breaking out at the other side and we didn’t deal with that situation very well,” he said.

“And the second goal is just – and I’ve said it to the players just now – really poor defending.

“It’s a real basic cross in the box. It’s a first contact, second contact finish. As always, as a head coach, you’ve got to shoulder that, but there’s also an element of you can’t legislate for those things when you’re stood at the side of the pitch and we find ourselves 2-0 down.

“We made a slight tweak in terms of trying to get a little bit more control in the game because we didn’t have enough control in the first half. I thought Ewan (Henderson) did that really, really well.

“And the second half was much better, but it doesn’t really matter because we’ve lost the game.”
